THE TECHNOLOGY
OF
LEGAL SERVICES
AND
THE LAW OF TECHNOLOGY
Starting in the early 1990s, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Communications of the Government of Québec, along with the Québec Bar Association, the Chamber of Québec Notaries and the Société québécoise d’information juridique (SOQUIJ) have provided financial support for the Association québécoise pour le développement de l'informatique juridique (AQDIJ).
Me Ferland participated in one of the first events of AQDIJ, the International Symposium held in 1992 where 80 participants from five continents held meetings over three days. During the following years, Me Ferland was elected to the Board of Directors of AQDIJ, and later as Chairman of the Scientific Committee charged with the evaluation and the selection of participants for future symposiums.
In 1994-95, he was elected President of AQDIJ. He has the privilege since then, to have become one of the few honorary members of that association which has spearheaded the practice and the law of Information Technologies for jurists in Québec.
He has subsequently presided the Computerization Committee which operated under the auspices of the Corporation de Services du Barreau du Québec, and was tasked with the review of software for the legal profession. Me. Ferland has also published over the past decade, various articles concerning technology in the legal profession, both in the "Journal du Barreau du Québec" and in The Upper Canada Law Society’s Gazette.
He was named in 1999 by a Decree by the Quebec National Assembly, on a recommendation of the Quebec Bar Association, to sit on the Board of Directors of SOQUIJ, mentioned above. He is also a member of its Executive Committee.
This long-standing involvement with Technology and the law has, evidently, provoked the ensuing development of Me Ferland’s competence in the field of the Law of technology, including of course Information Technology, Research and Development issues, the Pharmaceutical and other related industries. Me Ferland is also a Trade-Mark agent, well versed in issues related to industrial property, always essential in relationship with the preservation of Technological assets, as well as any transactions relating thereto.
